Dr. Mika graduated from the Kansas State University School of Veterinary Medicine. After graduation, he practiced in Watertown, South Dakota at Lake Area Veterinary clinic: a mixed animal practice reminiscent of the classic James Herriot books. In 1993, he and his family moved to Greeley where Dr. Mika joined Mackey Veterinary Service. He spent 10 years traveling the country side of Weld County visiting the many livestock operations Drs. Don and Larry Mackey had taken care of for decades. Through their mentorship, he grew to appreciate the art of veterinary practice and the people of Weld County. In 2000, Dr. Mika joined a group of veterinarians to form the first of three veterinary emergency hospitals in the Northern Colorado area. In 2001, he helped to open the first veterinary emergency hospital in the Greeley area: PETS Emergency Hospital. That same year he left Mackey and Mika Veterinary Service to become a full-time Emergency Veterinarian. In 2003, he helped open Fort Collins Veterinary Emergency Hospital (currently named Fort Collins Veterinary Emergency and Rehabilitation Hospital) opened. Dr. Mika now splits his time working emergency shifts and co-managing both hospitals. In his spare time, Dr. Mika enjoys remodeling homes, woodworking, hunting, and fishing. He and his wife and two boys along with his ‘’girls”, Italian Spinone’s Annie Mae and Ornella (Nellie), live in Eaton. He also keeps bees and chickens and enjoys gardening on his small acreage. In addition to Annie and Nellie, the Mika’s have an old dog named Skip who is his wife’s constant companion and shadow.
